Brief History
The founding diploma of the Jesuit Major College in Cluj was issued by Stefan Báthory on 12 May 1581 in Vilna (Vilnius, today in Lithuania). Originally established as a Jesuit college with Latin as the medium of instruction, the institution has undergone various transformations throughout the centuries.
Babes Bolyai University was founded in 1872, with an initial 258 students divided into four faculties: Medicine, Law and State, Philosophy, Liberal Arts and History, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In 1959, the two universities were unified, giving Babes Bolyai University its current name. The university has consistently expanded its international partnerships and now participates in major European educational networks including the EUTOPIA Alliance and Erasmus+ programs.
